Never Quit

Abraham Lincoln never quits.

Born into poverty, Lincoln was faced with defeat throughout his life. He lost eight elections, twice failed in business and suffered a nervous breakdown.

He could have quit many times – but he didn’t and because he didn’t quit, he became one of the greatest presidents in the United States history.

Here is a sketch of Lincoln’s road to the White House:

1. 1816 His family was forced out of their home. He had to work to support them.
2. 1818 His mother died.
3. 1831 Failed in business.
4. 1832 Ran for state legislature – lost.
5. 1832 Also lost his job – wanted to go to law school but couldn’t get in.
6. 1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
7. 1834 Ran for state legislature again – won.
8. 1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
9. 1836 Had a total nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
10. 1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature – defeated.
11. 1840 Sought to become elector – defeated.
12. 1843 Ran for Congress – lost.
13. 1846 Ran for Congress again – this time he won – went to Washington and did a good job.
14. 1848 Ran for re-election to Congress – lost.
15. 1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state – rejected.
16. 1854 Ran for Senate of the United States – lost.
17. 1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his party’s national convention – get less than 100 votes.
18. 1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again – again he lost.
19. 1860 Elected president of the United States.

Brooklyn Bridge An Living example for sheer Determination

Engeneers John Roebling and his son Washington Roebling constructed the bridge. It was the brain child of John Roebling. But everyone discouraged. With ceaseless determination and selfconfidence he stepped in to construct the bridge. In the midway he died in an accident. As he discussed every nook and corner with his son he was able to complete it inspite of his reduced mobility. I did not explain much about the bridge as you can see and know in the image attached.

What’s The Fastest Possible Speed?

Well imagine going 500,000 times faster than a concorde and you have a speed nearing 299,792,458 meters per second. This is the speed of light as it travels through a vaccum which is so fast that if you were able to move at this speed you could go around the earth 7 times in just 1 second, now that’s fast!


Obviously the speed of light passing through liquids and solids is slower but even then the speed of light is phenomenal. Many of you may also have heard of the concept of a light year, which represents the distance light would travel in a complete year.

This extraordinary number comes out to around 9,460,000 million kilometres. The term is used extensively in astronomy to measure distances between planets, stars and other celestial bodies. The simple fact of the matter is that distances involved when it comes to discussing the universe are so huge that you need a better unit of measure to make it more understandable.

Lastly those of you who watch too many space movies e.g. star wars, star trek etc and are familiar with concepts like warp speed or hyperspace then you’re probably wondering when we’ll be able to travel at speeds like those shown in the movies. Well the simple answer is it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see anything like that in our lifetime however tolearn more about the research going on in this area you can check out NASA’s section on breakthrough propulsion physics.

ஆசிரியர்களுக்கு சவாலாக விளங்கும் மாணவர்கள் யார்?

ஆசிரியரிடத்தில் மோதல் போக்குடன் நடக்கும் மாணவர்களை உளவியல் ஊக்கிகளின் மூலம் இரண்டுவகையாக பிரிக்கலாம்.

1. மாணவர்களில் சிலர் வீட்டில் ஒருமாதிரியும் பள்ளியில் வேறுமாதிரியும் உள்ளனர். பள்ளியில் நடைபெறும் விஷயங்கள் வீட்டிற்கு தெரியாவண்ணம் சாமர்த்தியமாக மறைத்து விடுகின்றனர். ஆசிரியர்கள் சிலசமயம் பெற்றோரை அனுகி மாணவர் பற்றி கூற விழையும் போது சம்மந்தப்பட்ட மாணவன் பின்வரும் மூன்று வகையாக ரியாக்ட் செய்கிறான்.

1. வெளி ஊருக்கு ஓடிவிடுதல்.
2. தற்கொலைக்கு விழைதல்
3. ஆசிரியரை மிரட்டவோ அடிக்கவோ செய்தல்.

இவர்களுக்கு தாம் பள்ளியில் செய்வது தவறு என்பது நன்கு தெரிந்து இருக்கும். எனவே தான் வீட்டில் உள்ள நல்ல பிள்ளை இமேஜை இழக்க அவர்கள் துணிவதில்லை( பெற்றோரின் ஏமாற்றத்தை காண சகிப்பதில்லை) அதற்காக அவர்கள் எந்த எல்லைக்கும் போகத்தயாராக உள்ளனர்.

2. மாணவர்களில் சிலர் மற்ற மாணவர்களில் இருந்து தனித்த ஒரு ஹீரோ இமேஜை வளர்க்க சிறுசிறு விதிமீறல்களை முதலில் ஆசிரியருக்கு தெரியாவண்ணமும் நாளடைவில் ஆசிரியருக்கு தெரிந்தும் செய்து வளர்த்து வருவர். இம்மாதிரியான சூழலில் ஏதேனும் கண்டிப்பான ஆசிரியரை பழிவாங்க எண்ணும் மாணவர்கள் நமது ஹீரோவிற்கு தூபம் போடுவர். உடனே இவர் ஆபத்பாந்தவனாய் செயல்பட்டு அவ்வாசிரியரை இழிவு படுத்தவோ அல்லது தாக்கவோ செய்வார்.

எனவே முதல்வகை மாணவர்களை கொஞ்சம் கவனமாக கையாள வேண்டும். ஆசிரியர் புகார் கூறுவதால் பெற்றோர் அவர்களை முற்றிலும் வெறுத்துவிடமாட்டார்கள் என்றும் எப்போதுமே அவரக்ள் தங்கள் குழந்தைகள் பக்கம் தான் இருப்பர் என்றும் கூறவேண்டும்.

உங்களது நல்லபிள்ளை முகத்திரை கிழிந்துவிடும் என்பது உண்மைதான். ஆனால் நீ முற்றிலும் திருத்த இயலாவண்ணம் கெட்ட பின்பு உன்னைப் பற்றி அறிந்து வருந்துவதை விட இப்போதே அவர்களுக்குத் தெரிந்தால் ஆசிரியர் உதவியுடன் உன்னை மீட்டு எடுக்க வாய்ப்பிருக்கும் அல்லவா? என மாணவர்களுடன் தனிமையில் மிகவும் பரிவுடன் ஆலோசிக்க வேண்டும். எப்போதுமே அவன் தாம் செய்தது தவறு என்ற குற்ற உணர்ச்சி எழும்வண்ணம் விஷயத்தை கொண்டு செல்ல வேண்டும் அப்போது தான் உங்களது ரெமிடி க்கு அவன் செவிசாய்ப்பான்.

ஹீரோ இமேஜீக்காக தவறு செய்பவர்களை கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாகத்தான் வழிக்குக் கொண்டுவர இயலும். முதலில் அவர்களுக்கு உண்மையான மகிழ்ச்சியை புகழ்ச்சியின் வாயிலாக அடையாளம் காட்ட வேண்டும். வினா கேட்கும் போது ரொம்பவும் கண்டிப்பாக இருப்பது மாதிரி காண்பித்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.(நன்றாக படிக்கும் மாணவர்களிடம்). நமது ஹீரோவுக்கு மட்டும் எளிய வினாவினை கேட்டு விடை பெற்று பெரிய அளவில் பாராட்ட வேண்டும்.( பரவாயில்லையே! நீ இவ்வளவு கஷ்டமான கேள்விக்கே பதில் சொல்லிட்டியே! நீ இப்போ முன்ன மாதிரி இல்ல ரொம்ப மாறிட்டே!) . இந்த யுத்தி அவனிடத்தில் நல்ல பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தும். விரும்பத்தக்க முன்னேற்றம் தொடர்ந்து கிடைத்தால் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக பொறுப்புக்ள கொடுத்து ஆக்கிரமிக்க வேண்டும்.( குழுத் தலைவர் ஆக நியமித்தல், வகுப்பில் அவனது பெயரை அடிக்கடி உச்சரித்தல், சில அதிமுக்கிய பொறுப்பினை அவனை நம்பி ஒப்படைத்தல்) இவ்வாறு செய்தால் நாளடைவில் நல்ல பலன் கிடைக்கும்.

இறுதியாக ஒன்று

வகுப்பறையில் ஆசிரியரின் கோபம் ஒரு நடிப்பாகவே இருக்க வேண்டும். எந்த சூழ்நிலையிலும் மாணவனின் மீதுள்ள அக்கரையும் அன்பும் மாறக்கூடாது. நாம் செய்யும் ஒவ்வொரு செயலும் மாணவர்களின் அக்கரையின் பால்பட்டதாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.

” உங்களது மகனுக்கு எப்படிப்பட்ட ஆசிரியர் அமைய வேண்டும் என நீங்கள் நினைக்கிறீர்களோ அப்படிப்பட்ட ஆசிரியராக முதலில் நீங்கள் இருக்க முற்பட்டால் நீங்கள் தான் நல்லாசிரியர்”.
